ID theft strikes over 10 million Americans every year, despite the fact that it can be easily avoided in many cases. Victims of this silent crime lose an average cost of five thousand dollars and spend an average of 600 hours recovering from an identity theft incident. Don't let it be you.

Come join the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Credit Counseling Services for Secure Your ID Day - an event to kick off National Protect Your Identity Week and protect yourself, both online and off.

When: Saturday, October 17, 2009, from 10AM to 2PM

  • In a large percentage of cases, victims were attacked by people they knew, who had access to their personal information
  • Identity theft has been the number one consumer complaint area to the FTC for the past six years in a row
  • Data breaches rose 68 percent in 2008 over the previous year, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center
  • 24 percent of identity theft victims were in the 18-29 age group, according to the FTC

The information shared at Secure Your ID Day may become invaluable to the way you operate your personal finances. If you use a credit card, receive billing statements, do business over the internet, or have personal information stored in computer files, you could be at risk for identity theft. Take advantage of this opportunity to shred and properly dispose of your personal documents.
